The Sahara without the rush
Most desert trips between Marrakech and Fes arrive at the dunes at dusk and leave at dawn. This one gives you an extra full day in Merzouga: time to ride out to the Gnaoua musicians of Khamlia, share tea with a nomad family, walk the fossil beds and watch the dunes change colour twice.
Along the way you cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass, walk the earthen streets of Aït Ben Haddou, follow the Dades and Todra valleys through their gorges, and finish through the Ziz Valley and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, arriving in Fes in the late afternoon of day four.
Because the tour is private, every stop is yours to adjust. Linger longer at a viewpoint, skip a lunch stop, add the film studios in Ouarzazate. Your driver-guide speaks English and has driven this road hundreds of times.

The Tizi n'Tichka pass
Climb from the plains of Marrakech to 2,260 metres through switchbacks and Berber villages clinging to the slopes of the High Atlas.

Walk the UNESCO-listed ksar with a local guide, the earthen fortress that has stood in for ancient cities in Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
Dades & Todra Gorges
Follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Rose Valley, then stand between the 300-metre walls of the Todra canyon.

Drive north past kilometres of date palms in the Ziz oasis, then through the Middle Atlas cedars of Azrou, home to Barbary macaques.

Timings are a guide. Driving hours are pure road time and don't include the stops, which is where the tour actually happens.
Over the Atlas to the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs
Your driver collects you from your riad in Marrakech around 7:30. The road climbs quickly into the High Atlas, with stops for views over the terraced villages on the way up to the Tizi n'Tichka pass. On the far side you descend to Aït Ben Haddou, where a local guide walks you through the alleys and rooftops of the ksar.
After lunch in Ouarzazate (with an optional stop at the Atlas Film Studios), the road east runs past the palm groves of Skoura and Kasbah Amridil, into the Rose Valley at Kelaat M'Gouna, and up into the Dades Valley. You sleep in a kasbah-style hotel above the river, with dinner included.
Todra Gorge and your first night in the dunes
A short drive brings you to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where you can walk between the canyon walls beside the stream. The landscape then opens out across the hammada towards Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops, and Rissani, the old caravan town at the edge of the Sahara.
You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon. Leave your main luggage in the vehicle, take an overnight bag, and ride out on camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset. Your camp has private ensuite tents with proper beds and hot showers. Dinner is served under the stars, followed by drums around the fire.
The day the three-day tour doesn't have
Wake before dawn to watch the sunrise from the top of the dunes, then ride back for breakfast. From here the day is spent by 4x4 around the edge of the erg: the Gnaoua musicians of Khamlia, a nomad family living in tents on the plateau, the abandoned mines of Mifis and the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji, where flamingos sometimes gather in spring.
The afternoon is free. Try sandboarding, book a quad, or simply rest by the pool at a lodge. For your second night you choose: back into the dunes to the camp, or a room at a Merzouga lodge with air conditioning, which we recommend between June and September.
The Ziz Valley, the cedars and the road to Fes
After breakfast you head north along the Ziz Valley, one of the largest oases in Morocco, with viewpoints over the river and its palm groves. You cross the Middle Atlas via Midelt, where lunch is usually taken, and continue through the cedar forest of Azrou, where Barbary macaques wait by the road.
A last stop in Ifrane, the alpine-looking town built by the French, and then the descent to Fes. Your driver drops you at your riad or hotel in the late afternoon, in time to lose yourself in the medina before dinner.

Before you go
Best time to travel
October to April brings cool, clear days in the desert. Summer is very hot after noon, which is why we recommend the lodge with air conditioning for night three between June and September.
What to pack
Layers: the desert drops close to freezing on winter nights. A scarf for the sand and sun, comfortable walking shoes, a torch, a power bank and a small overnight bag for the camp.
The camel ride
About an hour each way. It isn't advised during pregnancy, for people with back problems, or for very young children. A 4x4 transfer to the camp is always available instead.

Every Marrakech Sand Tours trip is private. The vehicle, the driver and the itinerary are yours alone, so you can change stops and timings as you go. We never combine bookings into shared departures.
The three-day version arrives in Merzouga at sunset and leaves for Fes the next morning. The four-day tour adds a second night in the desert and a full day around Merzouga: Khamlia, a nomad family, the fossil beds and free time in the dunes. It's the one to choose if the Sahara is the reason you're coming.
Private tents with real beds, quality linen, an ensuite bathroom with hot shower and electricity for charging. Dinner is a full Moroccan meal in the dining tent, then drums around the fire. It is comfortable, but it is still a camp in the dunes, and winter nights get cold.
Yes. The same route runs in the other direction with pick-up in Fes and drop-off in Marrakech. Let us know your starting city and we'll send the reversed itinerary.
Very much so. Day one and day four involve long drives, but with plenty of stops. Children usually love the camp and the camels; the camel trek can be swapped for a 4x4 transfer for anyone who prefers it. Tell us who is travelling and we'll adjust the pace and the accommodation.
