Tour overview
The Sahara’s wildest dunes, from Agadir
Erg Chigaga is Morocco’s largest and most remote sea of dunes, with crests rising up to 300 metres. Reached only by 4x4 across open desert, it offers a far quieter, more authentic Sahara than Merzouga — a place where nomad families still graze their camels and the night sky is completely dark.
This private tour leaves Agadir at dawn for the ramparts of Taroudant, the saffron country of Taliouine and the carpet villages around Taznakht. From Foum Zguid, the tarmac ends: your driver crosses fossil plains and the shimmering white bed of Lake Iriqui to reach the dunes in time for sunset.
A full day in the desert follows, with a camel trek to a palm oasis and a second night under the stars, before the return journey to the coast. Ideal if you’re staying in Agadir and want a real Sahara adventure without travelling via Marrakech.

Day-by-day itinerary
Your three days, day by day
Agadir to Erg Chigaga via Taroudant & Lake IriquiAgadir → Taroudant → Taliouine → Foum Zguid → Lake Iriqui → Erg Chigaga
An early start (around 6–7 am) from your hotel or riad in Agadir. Your first stop is Taroudant, often called “little Marrakech”, where you can walk beside its impressive ochre ramparts. The road then climbs between the High and Anti-Atlas to Taliouine, the heart of Morocco’s saffron country, with a lunch break around Taznakht, a village famous for its hand-woven carpets.
After Foum Zguid the tarmac ends and the real adventure begins. Your 4x4 crosses gravel desert and fossil plains, then the dazzling white expanse of Lake Iriqui, a dry lake bed inside a national park. Arrive at the great dunes of Erg Chigaga, where nomad families still live with their camels, in time to climb a dune for sunset. Dinner and overnight in a nomad tent at the desert camp — or under the stars if you prefer.

Enjoy a lunch break and a long rest in the shade of the palm trees, then ride back to camp in the late afternoon — around two hours on camelback — in time for sunset. Spend your second evening around the fire with dinner, Berber drums and one of the darkest, most star-filled skies in Morocco.

Questions about this tour
Can’t find your answer? Message us on WhatsApp and a local expert will reply quickly.
What is the difference between Erg Chigaga and Merzouga?
Erg Chigaga is larger, wilder and much more remote than Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi. It can only be reached by 4x4 across open desert, so there are far fewer visitors, no hotels at the foot of the dunes and a more authentic nomadic atmosphere.
Is a 4x4 really needed?
Yes. The final stretch from Foum Zguid to the dunes is around three hours of desert piste across fossil plains and the dry Lake Iriqui. We use a private 4x4 with an experienced desert driver for the whole tour.
How long are the driving days?
Days one and three are long travel days of about 8 hours each, including stops in Taroudant, Taliouine and Foum Zguid. Day two is spent entirely in the desert, with no driving.
What is the desert camp like?
The camp is a traditional nomad-style bivouac among the dunes, with Berber tents, beds and blankets, and dinner around the fire. Facilities are simple because of the remote location; upgraded tents with private bathrooms can be arranged on request.
What should I pack?
Comfortable shoes, warm layers for the cold desert nights, a scarf or cheche against the sun and sand, sunglasses, sun cream, a torch and a refillable water bottle. Your main luggage can stay in the vehicle.
Can the tour start or finish somewhere else?
Yes. We can pick you up anywhere in the Agadir area, including Taghazout, or finish the tour in Marrakech or Ouarzazate instead of returning to the coast. It can also be extended with extra nights in the desert.
