The tour

Marrakech to the Sahara, at an unhurried pace

This is the classic route to Merzouga, done properly: two full days on the road with real stops, not a rush to the dunes. You'll cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass through the High Atlas, walk the earthen ramparts of Ait Ben Haddou, and follow the Dades and Todra valleys before the desert opens up in front of you.

Every departure is private — your own vehicle, your own driver-guide, and a pace that's set around you rather than a bus timetable. The second night is spent at a desert camp beyond Merzouga village, reached by camel as the dunes turn gold at sunset.

Day 1

Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley

Over the High Atlas to the Dades Valley

Pickup from your Marrakech hotel or riad early in the morning. The road climbs through the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with stops for the mountain views and Berber villages along the way. In Ouarzazate, you'll pass the film studios before continuing to Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified kasbah where Gladiator and Game of Thrones were filmed. The day ends driving into the Dades Valley, known locally as the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, where you'll overnight in a guesthouse surrounded by rose gardens and rock formations.

Day 2

Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga

Through Todra Gorge to the dunes

After breakfast, drive to the Todra Gorge, where the canyon walls narrow to just a few metres apart — time to get out and walk. From there, the road runs along the edge of the desert through Tinghir and the Ziz Valley palmeries toward Merzouga. In the late afternoon, camels are waiting to carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes, timed to reach the camp as the sun sets over the sand. Dinner is cooked at the camp, followed by Berber drumming around the fire before you sleep under a genuinely dark sky.

Day 3

Merzouga → Marrakech

Sunrise over the dunes, and back to Marrakech

Early risers can climb a dune before breakfast to watch the sun come up over Erg Chebbi. Camels (or a 4x4, if you'd rather sleep in) take you back to Merzouga village, where your driver-guide is waiting for the return journey. It's a long drive back over the Atlas, with a lunch stop along the way — you'll arrive back at your Marrakech hotel in the evening.
