Tour overview

Where the Atlantic meets the Sahara

Southern Morocco is one of the few places in the world where you can swim in the Atlantic and sleep in the Sahara on the same trip. This private eight-day tour starts in sunny Agadir and follows the coast south through the Souss-Massa National Park to Tiznit, with its six kilometres of walls and silver market, the surf village of Mirleft, the famous red sea arches of Legzira and the Spanish-era seaside town of Sidi Ifni.

Turning inland, you climb into the Anti-Atlas to Tafraoute, set among pink granite boulders and almond groves, then cross the saffron country of Taliouine to Foum Zguid. From there a 4x4 carries you across the dry Lake Iriqui to Erg Chigaga, Morocco’s most remote dunes, for a camel trek, sandboarding and a night at a desert camp.

The return loop passes M’hamid, the palm groves of the Draa Valley, Tamegroute and Zagora, the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Benhaddou and the medieval ramparts of Taroudant, “the pearl of the Souss”, before you arrive back on the coast. Ideal year-round, and especially in summer, when the coast stays pleasantly cool.

Questions about this tour

Can’t find your answer? Message us on WhatsApp and a local expert will reply quickly.

Can Essaouira be added to this tour?

Yes. Essaouira is about three hours north of Agadir along the coast. We can add one or two days there at the start or end of the tour, turning it into a 9- or 10-day trip.

Can the tour start or end in Marrakech?

Absolutely. From Aït Benhaddou it is a short drive over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to Marrakech, so the tour can finish there instead of Agadir. It can also start in Marrakech, Casablanca or Rabat on request.

When is the best time for this tour?

This tour works well all year. The Atlantic coast stays pleasantly cool in summer, while spring and autumn are ideal for both the coast and the desert. In winter, days are sunny but desert nights are cold.

Is a 4x4 needed for the desert?

Yes. The route from Foum Zguid to Erg Chigaga and from the dunes to M’hamid follows desert pistes across Lake Iriqui, so we use a private 4x4 with an experienced desert driver for those days.

What is the desert camp like?

The camp is a traditional bivouac among the dunes of Erg Chigaga, with Berber tents, beds and blankets, and dinner around the fire. Upgraded tents with private bathrooms can be arranged on request.

Is this tour suitable for families?

Yes. The tour is private, so the pace is set around you, with beach time, short walks and plenty of stops. The camel ride is gentle, and sandboarding is always a favourite with children.
