A little more than a week, and both halves of Morocco
Most desert circuits treat Marrakech as a place to land and take off. This one doesn't. The loop through the south is the same one our guests love on the 7-day tour: over the Tizi n'Tichka to Aït Ben Haddou, along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley, through the Todra Gorge to Merzouga for a camel trek and a night in a luxury camp, a full day among the nomads and villages of Erg Chebbi, and home by the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate.
Then comes the difference: two whole days in Marrakech. One with a licensed guide through the medina, the palaces and the souks; one free, for the Majorelle Garden, a hammam, shopping, or nothing at all. You arrive at the airport a guest and leave knowing the city.
Everything in between is arranged: airport transfers, a riad in the medina, hotels and kasbahs on the road, the camp, the camels, the guides. The tour is private, so the pace and the stops are yours to adjust with your driver-guide.

A canyon corridor with sheer walls and a tame river at the bottom, beloved of climbers. You walk the riverside path between the cliffs.
A night in the luxury camp
One camel each into the Erg Chebbi dunes, a welcome tea, dinner under the stars, a comfortable tent, and a sunrise that is different every morning.
Gnaoua music and nomad families
A concert in Khamlia, UNESCO-listed Gnaoua rhythms, then Dakar rally tracks past abandoned mines to families who still live in tents on the plateau.
Rissani and the Draa Valley
The walled market town at the edge of the Sahara, then 150 kilometres of palm oasis, one of the largest on the continent, on the way to Ouarzazate.
Marrakech, properly
The Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate, then the Koutoubia, Jemaa el-Fna, the Saadian Tombs and the Bahia Palace with a certified guide, plus a free day of your own.
The itinerary
Driving times are pure road time. Stops, photographs and lunches come on top, and no day is a marathon.
We meet you at the terminal
From the moment you land, the logistics are ours. Your driver is waiting at Marrakech Menara with a private vehicle and takes you to your riad inside the medina. Once you've checked in, the afternoon or evening is yours for a first unguided wander, a preview of what you'll see properly with a guide on day 7. Dinner tonight is on your own; we'll suggest a rooftop.
The Tizi n'Tichka and the ksar of Aït Ben Haddou
Your driver-guide collects you after breakfast and heads south into the High Atlas, the range that separates Marrakech from the desert. The road crests at the Tizi n'Tichka pass, 2,260 metres up, with the highest peaks of the chain around you.
The centrepiece of the day is Aït Ben Haddou. From outside it's a huddle of earthen walls and towers; inside, alleys and stairways lead up to the granary and the view over the river where caravans once forded. Lunch in Ouarzazate, then east through the Skoura palm grove and the Rose Valley into the Dades Valley, stopping for the night at a charming riad in Boumalne Dades.
Todra Gorge, Erfoud, and camels into the dunes
The most anticipated day, and the desert comes at the end of it. First, the Dades Valley itself, with villages like Tinghir sheltered under rocky heights and a lush palm grove. From Tinghir a side road leads into the Todra Gorge, a corridor of vertical rock with the small Todra river at the bottom; you walk the path along the bank.
Then across rocky hills and past old kasbahs to Erfoud, where marble and fossils are the local industry, and on to Merzouga. Here your camels are waiting, one per person, to carry you into the Erg Chebbi dunes to the luxury camp. Welcome tea, dinner, and a night in a comfortable tent under the stars.
Sunrise, Gnaoua music, rally tracks and nomads
Early risers are rewarded: the sunrise over the dunes happens every morning and is never the same twice. After breakfast at the camp you return to Merzouga and swap camels for a 4x4 to explore the corners of the desert most visitors never see. First, Khamlia, whose people descend from sub-Saharan traders and slaves and whose Gnaoua music is listed by UNESCO; you'll hear a short concert over tea.
The middle of the day is an adventure track along old Dakar rally routes, past abandoned villages and kohl mines, to nomad families living in tents on the plateau who'll tell you how life here resists change. A high viewpoint over the erg closes the loop. Dinner and the night are in a fine hotel in Merzouga, with a proper shower and a pool.
Rissani and the Draa Valley
The road west is long, so it's broken with the right stops. The first is Rissani, a small town with a surprising walled medina and a market of colours, flavours and smells, complete with its famous donkey park. Then the pre-Saharan country around Alnif and Tazzarine, acacias and long views to the Jbel Saghro.
You know you've reached the Draa Valley when the palms begin: an oasis some 150 kilometres long, one of the largest in Africa, with ksour and kasbahs strung along the river. Late in the day you arrive in Ouarzazate, Morocco's Hollywood, home to the Atlas Studios where Lawrence of Arabia and many others were shot. Dinner and the night in a hotel-riad.
The Taourirt Kasbah, then back over the Atlas
Before leaving Ouarzazate, visit its finest monument: the Taourirt Kasbah, once the palace-fortress of the Glaoui family, pashas of Marrakech and lords of the Atlas until the last century. Outside it is an austere Berber castle in earth; inside, carved plaster, painted cedar and ceramics in the refined Islamic tradition.
Then the Tizi n'Tichka again, this time descending its greener northern face. You reach Marrakech early enough for a free afternoon: shopping, a rest, a first look at the souks, whatever readies you for the guided day tomorrow.
The red city with a guide, then on your own
The great cultural visit of the trip. A certified guide walks you through the walled medina, one of the largest and most beautiful in the country: the Koutoubia minaret, Jemaa el-Fna square (itself on UNESCO's intangible heritage list), the Saadian Tombs, the Bahia Palace, and the souks in between. No single walk covers everything, but this one shows you the real Marrakech that goes unnoticed without a guide.
The afternoon is free. The Majorelle Garden, the Ben Youssef Medersa, the Marrakech Museum, a hammam, or a long lunch on a terrace. Night in your riad.
A slow breakfast, then your flight
The last day is shaped by your departure time, but there's always room for an unhurried breakfast at the riad. At the agreed hour your driver collects you for the transfer to Marrakech Menara, where our services end and, we hope, your plans for a return begin.
Marrakech is a city to discover, not just to land in
The red city, named for its brick, has been an imperial capital for centuries and is still the country's great tourist reference. It is lively to the point where boredom is impossible. This tour keeps a full guided day for it and a free afternoon on either side, so you experience the medina at your pace as well as ours.

Before you go
Best time to travel
October to April for the desert and the city alike. July and August are very hot in both; we then start early, shorten afternoons, and choose riads with pools.
What to pack
Layers for cold desert nights in winter, a scarf or hat, sun cream, comfortable trousers for the camel, walking shoes for the medina, a power bank, and a small bag for the camp night.
The camel ride
One camel per person, about an hour into the dunes. Not advised during pregnancy or with back problems; a 4x4 transfer to the camp is included as the alternative.
Frequently asked
The southern loop is the same. The 8-day version adds a full extra day in Marrakech: the guided medina tour gets its own day (day 7) instead of being squeezed into the afternoon you arrive back from Ouarzazate, and you gain a free afternoon on day 6 and another on day 7. Choose it if the city matters to you as much as the desert.
Yes. The vehicle, the driver-guide and the itinerary are exclusively yours. We never combine bookings into shared departures, which is what lets you adjust stops and pace along the way.
Yes. Your driver meets your arriving flight and drops you at your departing one. If you're already in Marrakech, we simply start from your hotel and adjust day 1 and day 8.
Private tents with real beds, quality linen and, in the luxury category, an en-suite bathroom with hot water. Dinner and breakfast are at the camp, there's a fire and drums after dinner, and the sunrise is a short climb from your tent.
Breakfast is at your riad. Dinners in Marrakech aren't included so you can choose, and we'll advise and book: a rooftop over the square, a garden restaurant in the palmeraie, or a home-style table in the medina.
